Job Description
Alabama State University, Academic Affairs, invites applications for the position of Retention Specialist.
The successful candidate will provide and coordinate academic advisement services to academically at-risk students, promote a culture of retention, maintain accurate advising records, and sustain an environment conducive to student success.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop and maintain accurate knowledge of the University's policies, Programs and Procedures, Student Handbook, Undergraduate Catalog, Academic Advisement Center's Reference Guide, and interpret these for students as needed
Use the Early Alert system to monitor, track, and report on students' academic progress
Provide individualized academic "coaching" to assigned students throughout the academic term
Develop and maintain accurate knowledge of general and specific curricular and core requirements for students as a caseload
Review and analyze available data on students to assess their individual needs and potential, in order to assist them with their program
Assist at-risk students in gaining knowledge of various academic programs, and guide them in selecting a program of study compatible with their career interest/goals
Refer students to appropriate academic, social, and emotional support offices on and off campus
Provide students with course selections based on academic history and recommendations from their Major College Advisor
Approve students' proposed course schedule/course additions each term and occasionally confer with the appropriate faculty advisor regarding courses or schedule adjustments
Develop and present at least one academic support workshop per semester
Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in psychology, counseling, education, student affairs, or related field, and one year of full-time professional experience working directly with at-risk students at the college/university level are required.
Master's degree preferred.
