Job Summary
The Senior Automation Engineer is responsible for delegating, balancing, and overseeing existing/future PLC software projects from the design phase to onsite implementation while playing a key role in the coaching and development of current engineering team.
The individual will be responsible for interfacing with customers directly in order to gather project critical information, relay sequence of operation to controls engineers for software design start, as well as monitor progress to ensure deadlines for commissioning start are met accordingly.
Responsibilities and Duties
Report directly to Engineering Manager, or directly to Owner in absence of Manager.
Delegate and balance existing and incoming workloads to programmers as well as take ownership of a portion of the projects from a software design & commissioning standpoint
Provide weekly updates on engineering workload to Engineering Manager
Monitor and maintain schedule such that deadlines are met for onsite startups and overlap is prevented
Work closely with ASI sales to understand new projects and relay sequence of operation and project requirements to programmers
Work closely with ASI sales on verifying man hours for projects and workloads for sales planning.
Develop relationships with existing and new customers to identify assigned project needs in a timely manner.
Interface with customers directly to determine commissioning support expectations as well as dates needed onsite
Training and assistance with new hire learning.
Self-sufficient with project research and development.
Oversee projects to keep standards and quality in our programming.
After hours support with assigned projects or delegated in agreement with co-workers of comparable capabilities when needed.
Develop Functional Scope Documents prior to project implementations and retrieve signoff from customers
Estimate time and resources needed for controls portion of projects.
Understanding and implementation of customer and ASI specifications and standards.
Professionally represent ASI at customer’s sites during commissioning and service.
Active participation in communicating and suggesting company goals.
Communicate and provide status reports to management.
Qualifications and Skills
Knowledgeable in material handling systems including conveyors, robots, lift tables, etc.
Ability to design PLC Logic in Rockwell Studio 5000 for ground up systems
Experience and understanding in different communication protocols
Knowledge in MDR conveyor controls platforms such as Hytrol, Insight Automation, is a plus
Programming Knowledge in other platforms including Omron, Siemens, Automation Direct is a plus
Ability to design Graphical User Interfaces with Rockwell Factory Talk View Studio, CXONE, Automation Direct, Visual Basic, Indusoft Web Studio, and/or GT Works.
Ability to develop, read, and interpret electrical drawings
Experienced using various communication protocols, including Ethernet IP, DeviceNet, and Ether Cat.
Commissioning experience for conveyor systems
Troubleshooting Auto Sol existing systems for projects completed in the event customers are down
Proficient with Microsoft Office.
Engineering Background or equivalent field of study
3+ years working in a controls engineering role
